The Best Job and The Worst Job

Sunday was Mother’s Day, and I’ve got to give a shout out to all the moms out there. Motherhood is the toughest, most demanding job I’ve ever had; yet at the same time, it’s the most rewarding.

Over the last 4 years I’ve had moments where I’ve been yacked on, pooped on, peed on, cried on, screamed at, kicked, head-butted, scratched, bit and hit. (For the record though, Jeff has been the target of the last several rounds of yacking – so dads get it too).

I’ve received stink-eye and dirty looks galore. I’ve been manipulated, pushed to my breaking point and reduced to a sobbing mess. All by a someone under 40 lbs who has the strength of ten men at times.

Ah, yes, motherhood. We’ll leave it at that and not add all the “fun” things about being pregnant, giving birth and nursing…

But all that seems insignificant when compared to all the good along this journey so far.

Hearing and seeing my baby’s heartbeat for the very first time.

Feeling those fluttery kicks from inside.

Holding my child for the first time finally – when she was 4 days old.

Enjoying every one of the other “firsts.”

Watching my sweet girl grow into a fun-loving toddler then a smart, playful preschooler.

Staring at my miracle  as she sleeps peacefully at night.

Delighting in her thoughtfulness.

Laughing hysterically at the funny things she says.

Amazed by her intelligence.

Thrilled to teach her all I can.

Taking pride in her good manners and sweet disposition.

Enjoying her ability to quickly make friends.

Anticipating the young lady she’ll someday become.

Hearing “I love you, Mama.”

Being a mom is simply worth it.

It may take more patience than I ever thought I could have. The hours are rough. The lack of sleep tougher. I’ve spent hundreds of hours questioning my abilities and intuition.

An equal number of hours hoping I don’t scar her for life or damage her enough to qualify for the Jerry Springer Show.

But I do know one thing for certain. No child has ever been more wanted or more loved. And no mother has ever been so lucky.

It may be both the best job and the worst job…But I’m glad it’s mine.
